Alpaca Farm Manager (6320)

Location: Portland, Oregon

Job Number: 6320

This job is to oversee and manage many aspects of a 65-90 head alpaca farm. The farm has 2 barns and numerous shelters, 10 acres of irrigated pastures, fences, farm roads, irrigation system, and more. The owners live on site and would remain involved in the farm operations. Farm manager needs to be fluent in Speaking, Reading and Writing English.

Responsibilities:
* Management of farm staff
* Manage the hiring and firing and training the of farm staff with owner's input
* Work cooperatively with the Head Gardener and Garden team and have flexibility about helping each other and sharing equipment
* Work with alpacas: supervising overall health, birthing, training, assist in sales and attend shows when needed
* Manage large scale farm compost operation
* Oversee health of pastures through fertilizing, liming, replanting, mole eradication, etc
* Operating and maintaining tractors, mowers, chainsaw, power tools, hand tools
* Maintenance and repair of farm systems: electrical, mechanical, plumbing, irrigation, farm equipment etc. Have skills for minor repairs and arrange for repairs with experts when needed
* Maintain farm roads, fences, handle firewood, clean out gutters, pressure washing when needed on farm structures, basically maintenance of farm infrastructure.
* Transport alpacas with truck and trailer to shows or to vet
* Be "on call" for troubleshooting unforeseen circumstances on farm
* Computer skills desirable, Microsoft word and excel
* Must work well with a variety of other staff and customers
* Organize tasks efficiently, explain tasks clearly and effectively to others
* Keep records of what has been done and what needs to be done
* Work comfortably outside in all weather
* Lifting hay bales, feed and fertilizer bags, etc., and be able to perform physical farm work required
* Willing to work occasional longer hours and some weekends when required
* Must have reliable transportation, we are not served by mass transit

Qualifications: Must have livestock experience, preferably with camelids. Prefer experience showing animals. Good handyman skills. Would prefer an animal science degree. Management experience is required - preferably farm/ranch management.

Benefits: This position requires living nearby to the farm. This is a salaried position, and compensation will depend on experience and skills. After 6 months employment, the employee can start accumulating benefits which are:
* 6 paid holidays

* 1 week of sick pay/year.
* $100 medical bonus/Month
