Job Description

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at the University of Alaska is seeking a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to join our multidisciplinary research team focused on the borealization of the Bering Sea and its impact on fisheries management. This position is a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research aimed at improving scientific advice for fisheries management through advanced statistical and ecological analysis.

Key Responsibilities for the position include: 1) Develop and implement a spatially-resolved borealization index across the Bering Sea. 2) Utilize the index as a covariate in models of population dynamics and distribution for key marine species. 3) Analyze the ecological and economic impact of borealization on fisheries resources. 4) Communicate results to stakeholders and managers and help integrate findings into ecosystem-based management advice. 5) Write scientific papers and reports documenting findings and implications.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in marine sciences and statistics or quantitative ecology, experience with spatial and spatial-temporal models, and good programming skills (such as R or Python). We seek enthusiastic applicants who can provide evidence of creativity, productivity, and strong oral and written communication skills. The successful applicant will be an independent and motivated problem solver who enjoys working in a collaborative environment. Experience working at the interface of physical oceanography and biology or in climate change ecology is ideal but not necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree (already received, or have completed all requirements and awaiting graduation) in a relevant discipline
  • Preferred Disciplines: Fisheries, oceanography, marine biology or another relevant natural science subject
  • Must possess terminal degree prior to the start of position

Position Details:

This Post Doctoral Fellow position will be based at the AFSC Kodiak Laboratory or at the AFSC Auke Bay laboratories in Juneau, Alaska. Applicants who would like to work at the AFSC Sand Point Laboratory in Seattle or remotely may also be considered.
It is full-time, term-funded, exempt, 12-month, complete with both a competitive salary and  full employee benefits package . The starting salary will be based on education and experience. Duration of this project is to December 31, 2027.
